Organ, Tissue and Cell Transplantation

In Turkey, all information regarding persons who want kidney transplantation is kept in the Ministry’s “National Organ Transplant Waiting List” program.

International Organ Transplantation Information System

We created an International Organ Transplantation Information System including all information from patients who wait for a donor or organ transplantation.
This system is followed up by organ transplantation centers, regional coordination centers and National Coordination Centers (UKM).

Organ transplantation is one of the most helpful treatment and for some organs the one and only treatment. In some cases of chronic liver and heart diseases, when such helpful treatments as dialysis treatments are not done, patients unfortunately die when they cannot find an organ. In Turkey there are nine regional coordination centers that provide organ distribution from cadaver and are connected to National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Coordination Center: Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Adana, Antalya, Samsun, Diyarbakir, Erzurum and Bursa.

We certified kidney transplantation centers in 59 Hospitals, liver transplantation centers in 34 Hospitals and heart-lung transplantation centers in 16 Hospitals in Turkey. In 2011 the first arm and face transplantation conducted in Akdeniz University put Turkey into the leading position in medical science. This success received wide appreciation not only in our country but around the world.

Tissue and Cell Transplantation

In order to provide necessary tissue supply for organizations and institutions working in the field of Organ and Tissue Transplantation around the country the Tissue Bank (Ankara University), Bone Bank (Atatürk Training and Research Hospital) and Muscle-Skeleton System Bank was opened. In order to increase the number of Tissue Typing Laboratories that are vital for Organ and Bone marrow Transplantation services and to provide fast Tissue Typing in every Region we conducted new certifications, thus increasing the number of Tissue Typing Laboratories to 32 around Turkey.

Since in proportion to the population of the country the number of Bone Transplantation that is supposed to be 4000 year cannot be reached due to lack of available donors, the actual number of Bone Marrow Transplantation is limited to approximately 800-900 persons a year. More than 3000 people are on the waiting list each year. In Bone Marrow Transplantation most of the donors are non-relatives and most of the donor tissue is obtained from abroad.
Since the number of Bone Marrow donor in Turkey is less than 40.000 the donor Tissue is searched from abroad. The fact that Social Security Institution now covers the costs of Bone Marrow obtained from abroad has facilitated the procurement of Tissue for those in need. In order to establish active Transplantation Centers in every region and improve the service we increased the number of Transplantation Centers by certifying new centers.
As of June 2011 there are 45 Transplantation Centers, 14 of which are Pediatric and 31 are for adult patients. By allowing mesenchymal applications in Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD) in accordance with scientific criteria with become one of the leading countries in Stem Cell Medicine. Stem Cell Transplantation experimental treatment was conducted in Ankara University on 10 patients. In order to decrease the number of patients waiting for Cornea Transplantation and to increase the number of Cornea Tissue obtained from Cadavers we increased the number of Eye Banks to 16 by connecting each Eye Bank to the Tissue Source Center.

Turkey Stem Cell Coordination Center (TURKÖK)

In order to prevent the chaos regarding Stem Cell and Stem Cell Treatment that has gained significance in the recent years we established and activated the Turkey Stem Cell Coordination Center (TURKÖK)

Congregating under one roof with the coordinators of the Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation centers,

  • Increasing the opportunities for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients by establishment of National Bone Marrow Bank,,
  • Achieving EU standards and improving administrative capacity, providing coordination hematopoietic stem cell procurement from domestic volunteering donors with various HLA types for patients awaiting Transplantation with screening of Cord Blood donated to national non-relative Cord Blood Bank.
  • Providing coordination for hematopoietic stem cell procurement from foreign Tissue Banks for the patients that could not find volunteer donor in Turkey,
  • Obtaining total of 50.000 cord blood donation by 2013
  • Conducting more than 2.500 transplantations a year,
  • In order to reach the estimated number of donors, establishing Region Coordination Centers in 29 Health Zones,
  • In each region establishing Voluntary Donor Centers in the amount that is required in accordance with the data of “Region Coordination Center”,
  • Establishment of National non-relative Cordon Blood Bank and cordon blood collection centers (Donations of Cord Blood from our Ministry, University, Funds and Private Obstetrics Hospitals),
  • By providing coordination between domestic and international centers, decreasing the number of patients and death rates in transplantation waiting list by increasing the chances of high quality treatment and short treatment time,
  • Initiating the accreditation process of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Centers with such international organizations as European Bone Marrow Donor Information System (EM-DIS), Bone Marrow Donors of the World (BMDW), World Bone Marrow Donor Association (WMDA), European Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation Group (EBMT), providing integration and coordination. ,
  • Meet the establishment costs by 2013 and enable meeting the operating costs without additional funding.
  • Sponsoring domestic and international scientific projects, providing technical support by means of the obtained profit.

Replantation Applications

The break of Limb or limbs, as a result of accidents or similar causes to stitch the broken parts together is a raise against the time and can take hours. The problem by a replantation starts with the missing coordination by directing the patient to the right health center and the disruptions in the organization.

Formerly patients with severe hand injuries or amputations had to wonder from hospital to hospital due to the lack of information or being discharged without stabilization; Patients transferred with 112 ambulances were losing time due to the lack of appropriate facilities.

These days approximately 750 replantation cases are handled each year. Complex hand injuries and subsequent micro surgery applications reached 1500. The number of actively involved specialist physicians is around 75. By providing minor specialty in hand surgery to the plastic surgeons and orthopedists we plan to increase the number of 300. By conducting a countrywide survey we determined the list of public and private center that can perform replantation. Today the capacity of centers capable of treating complex and injuries and amputation cases in hospitals affiliated with Turkish Minister of Health, Universities and private sector has spread to 22 cities.
